Thousands of Nepalese minors forced to sleep with more than fifty men a day; they are locked in rooms or cages where they are beaten, starved, drugged, burned and raped by their jailers and the countless men who use and abuse them. the average age of a Nepalese girl sold to India 13 years. Only 1% of these sex slaves ever manage to escape or be rescued”. “

The beginning of this year has been extremely interesting. Suddenly the subject of sex-slavery in India and Nepal was on many people’s lips here in Sweden through a video clip from a brothel in India on Facebook. It went viral and created a sensation. It was highlighted in the big evening papers and in radio and other media. It’s truly amazing how posts and videos on Facebook can create such an enormous attention. Many Swedes seem to be shocked by the reality that exists in the brothels of India, and the topic has even cropped up in parliament as Prime Minister Stefan Löfven will make a state visit to India shortly.
Out of Ashes have been heavily involved for six years now with the work in Nepal right from the start, and we are pleased indeed for the attention surrounding the topic and the interest to do something about it.
Lighthouse Foundation Nepal (LHFN) – one of the larger organizations against trafficking in Nepal
LHFN is the organization that started everything and is led by Raju Sundas, a visionary entrepreneur who works copiously, creates contacts, open doors and get things done. He has contacts and friends in Parliament and the government and in many national and international NGOs. He and his team is doing a tremendous job in Nepal and are the real heroes. We are raising funds and assisting in various ways and we have our roles, but those operating in the field are the true heroes. Raju had a vision of helping the Badi people fifteen years before I even met him the first time, but in the perfect time the work was started.
A Day of destiny, a Day of new beginning, A historical Day
I remember very well that day in February 2009 when I met Raju and I first time visited the area in western Nepal where the Badi people live. The visit shook me and moved me deeply, and that experience was the seed that was planted in our hearts to start the work to save girls from the sex trade. We decided to offer a way of preventing girls from ending up in slavery by starting a girls’ home in Kathmandu. The date was set for December 2009.
They were being groomed for a life of prostitution as so many girls are.
At that time I still lived with my family in Singapore and I went home and started to raise funds for the start. Encountering so many girls that were being groomed for a life of prostitution as many of the Badi girls are, just caused us to act. At the start in December I was back in Kathmandu, and together with Raju and the invited Minister of Energy from the government, we opened the first girls’ home. There was something of destiny with this small home. There were many who cried tears of joy that day.
On that day in December 2009, I wrote:
Track-suits and warm blankets for the Badi girls
“It was such a joy just to go and buy track-suits, socks, caps, underwear and other personal items for the small girls. After the inauguration they were so happy when they saw the rooms and the mattresses on the floors (bunk-beds are being painted), so that they straight away crept under the thick warm blankets. Out in the villages they have very little clothes or blankets, and it is freezing cold now in Nepal. No wonder they were so quick in getting into the beds to warm themselves under these blankets. It must be like heaven to them. They also received a few stuffed toys which were the first they ever had in their lives. Tears welled up in my eyes when I saw the joy they showed over these few small things. How many more children are there not in this world suffering like these girls?”
The little seed is today a large tree
The small seed that was planted then, when we prevented thirty girls from being forced into sex-slavery, has grown to a large tree as there are 680 students in eight hostels in Kathmandu and two in other towns. There are now many who water, some with large water jugs and some with small water jugs, but it is growing fast.
CCS School was started after a few years with the help of another international organization with teachers who have extensive experience in the education field. They have taken great responsibility for teachers’ training and also partly supported the school.
‘Awareness Tours’ in Singapore, US and Japan
We have arranged Awareness Tours to Japan, USA and Singapore together with some ofthe girls to create awareness, raise funds and try to get scholarships for university studies.
‘Untouchables – Children of God’ – creating awareness
We also initiated and was one of the producers of the documentary film ‘Untouchables – Children of God’ in order to create awareness about the rape industry in brothels in India and Nepal. It has been shown at film festivals in several countries and on Singapore Airlines in-flight video entertainment and in many private screenings and is available for download at Code Red Films website.
Baby birds with broken wings
Seeing the little girls that looked like baby birds with broken wings in February 2009, and now see them as young, strong, beautiful, bold girls who go to school and are preparing for university, it’s almost unreal. It is so moving. Are these the same girls?
This is what we live for, what we cry for and rejoice over; to see freed, transformed, bold girls who go from slavery to freedom, from darkness to life.
