Heavy flooding in Balchur

On Saturday, after the heavy rain in the Badi village, not a single thing in Sher Bahadur’s house was left behind. He and his family were only left with the clothes they were wearing, their other things including the house were washed away.

Saturday 18 July the Badi Village of Balchur was heavily flooded.

“On Saturday, after the heavy rain in the Badi village, not a single thing in Sher Bahadur’s house was left behind. He and his family were only left with the clothes they were wearing, their other things including the house were washed away. Now he does not have a house to live in, food to eat or clothes to wear. The rainfall was only for five hours but the damage it did was disastrous since the Badi people live near the river bank. They were sleeping when the water came into their house and they had to rush out of the house as fast as they could. He said “I was able to save my life but my house, my clothes, and my other things were washed away in front of my eyes.” “After working hard for my whole life I had built the house but that also was destroyed, now I have nothing to say that is mine.”

He has lived in the village for 13 years and the floods and landslides during the rainy season have been a major problem for the Badi people for many years. “Even though people help us with our needs but the major problem which is our living situation, no one is paying attention to this, which is a sad fact.” Many adults, young boys and girls have died over the years during the rainy season. Even after the deaths of many, no one has paid any attention to constructing a wall to prevent water to enter the village. The municipality chief has given 30,000 rupees to build small channels or drains for the water to flow away from the village but even though it has been built, it could not stop this year’s floods from entering the village that washed away everything.

  • Together with the covid-19 pandemic, the situation in Nepal is even worse than normal because of the heavy rains that are causing landslides and flooding. The lockdown was extended to 22 July. Food situation is still dire. We continue to raise funds for food packets to respond to the pandemic.
  • The most urgent need is still for food packets, but mosquito nets and other basic supplies are also greatly needed. Please help! Be generous!
